Dr. Barbara Kowalcyk and the Center for Foodborne Illness Research and Prevention (housed in CFAES’s Department of Food Science and Technology) recently received almost $700,000 from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Purdue University’s Food Safety Innovation Lab (FSIL) toward improving food safety in Kenya. The team includes her department mates Kara Morgan and Ahmed Yousef as well as Sanja Ilic and Robert Scharff from OSU, three Kenyans, and two from The University of Florida.

Rafael Quijada Landaverde, a Ph.D. student in the lab of Dr. Mary Rodriguez, is one of seven students combatting food insecurity in the US and Mexico. These Kirchner Food Fellows began meeting virtually in September and decided they would concentrate on using the $50,000 that the program enables them to invest in companies working on water: from water governance to irrigation or drinking water.

The Ohio State University has ranked No. 6 among large schools on the Peace Corps’ list of top volunteer-producing colleges and universities in 2020. There are 62 Buckeyes currently volunteering in countries around the world.
The university held strong at its No. 6 spot from last year’s ranking on the annual list. Consistently ranked in the top 10 for the last eight years, Buckeyes have shown their commitment to helping people in interested countries meet their need for trained men and women. The university is among three Ohio schools on the list this year.

The Peace Corps has announced that Ohio State ranked No. 5 among large schools on the agency’s 2019 Top Volunteer-Producing Colleges and Universities list. There are 62 Buckeyes currently volunteering worldwide. Since the agency’s founding in 1961, 1,883 Buckeyes have served in communities around the world.

The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) was recently awarded a grant from the American Councils on International Education, with support from the U.S. Embassy in Astana, to establish a partnership between The Ohio State University and Kazakh National Agrarian University (KazNAU) in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Dr. Mark Erbaugh, Director of International Programs in Agriculture, and Dr. Luis Cañas, Associate Professor in the Department of Entomology, traveled to the Pan-American School of Agriculture – popularly referred to as Zamorano University - in Honduras from December 6 – 12, 2018, to reaffirm and strengthen existing linkages on behalf of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES).
