The Netherlands: Oliebollen and onions under the ocean

Jelmer Poelstra, PhD
Molecular & Cellular Imaging Center (MCIC), OSU Wooster
Jelmer grew up amidst endless cow-filled meadows in the northern part of The Netherlands. Having always been interested in nature and particularly birds, studying biology as an undergrad was an obvious choice. At the University of Groningen, he focused on how populations diverge in separate species. Jelmer then studied the genomics of speciation in carrion and hooded crows for his PhD degree at Uppsala University in Sweden. At UNC Chapel Hill and Duke in North Carolina, he did postdocs on genomics in cichlid fish and mouse lemurs before joining OSU this June. He lives with his wife in Wooster and is still an avid birder.
